Napoleon Bonaparte had made numerous reforms in France, his most famous was, the “Napoleonic code”, also known as the “Code of Civil Law of 1804” ,it was a combination of: revolutionary statues, Roman law, and French traditional law. It had made the legal system unified, and recognized that all men were equal before law. All men were entitled to freedom of worship (religion) as well as rights to work at any occupation that they desired. Some parts of this code still influences the French laws up till now. However, there had been a large downside to this, the code excluded women and not only that, but it made men the absolute head of the household who controlled the women and all property. In fact, some laws were removed, that were put in place during the revolution, which gave more rights to women. After the code had been put in place other laws were passed to limit the liberties of the people.
An other reform that was important came before the Napoleonic code, The Concordat of 1801, it was a settlement between the Roman Catholic Church and the State. The treaty reestablished a good relation between the two. The following were agreed upon: people who have had purchased land that belonged to the church could keep it, the governing officials would pay salaries to the clergy, Property such as buildings was to be returned, and finally Bishops would be nominated by the state but consecrated and designated by the Pope. Also The Concordat stated that even though the majority of the French were Catholics’ other religions were allowed.
Under Napoleons rule, the government had become completely centralized. Him and advisors made all the major decisions due to the fact that he appointed all the “heads” and lesser officials of the départments.
Napoleon also supported the reorganization of the education system in France. An extensive system of public schooling was made under his supervision. However, the schools were structured as if they were training an army
Economics were changed in France, Napoleon whished to strengthen the economic affairs of the country in the following: manufacturing, agriculture and stimulation of commerce. The government took up the following actions: collected taxes efficiently, established animal-breeding points to improve stock standards, sponsored exhibitions for exchange of information about manufacturing methods, made road construction a priority both for commercial uses as well as military, finally he made efforts in order to increase exports. Also he tried to balance out the national budget and France started to collect “forced payments” from other nations that they’ve conquered. Napoleon supported the idea of a national bank, so the bank of France was created, this bank allows the privet sector to get loans. This helped out a lots of entrepreneurs and the economy. The bank also had the right of issuing “paper money”.
As you now know Napoleon made France what it is now, with out him it would have never risen to the heights it did. He revolutionized the laws, customs and banished the old traditions. He did not change just the French culture but the culture of the whole of Europe. History will never forget him.
