Napoleon and His Effects on Nationalism throughout European Countries

Nationalism emerged from the French Revolution and was used by Napoleon to make France a great power and to make other empires fall. As Napoleon did more and more great things the greater the nationalism was in France and then when he abdicated and the new king (Louis XVIII) came to power nationalism became scarce. Then once again Napoleon came to power and boosted the moral of the people, and using it he gained even more supporters. Then when he had been exiled for the second time there was no crash in nationalism just a decline.
In Latin America Spain clamed a lot of the colonies, then when Spain got conquered by the French and the king was over turned, Latin America decided to get rid of the French and Spanish rule so they rebelled, at this moment their nationalism level is very high. They achieve their independence, most of the colonies by 1830 had rebelled and became an independent country with many patriotic people.
Spain and Portugal was defeated be Napoleons army and he had put his brother on the throne of Spain becouse they did not wish to comply with “The Continental System” and this would have been a great loss to France if Trade was allowed to continue. Throughout both of these countries a great feeling of nationalism was developing and it would continue up until the point that they get rid of the French from their soil.
In Russia nationalism was fairly good until the war with France and then it must have fallen when they had to torch Moscow. But then when they defeated the mighty French nationalism was soaring. Napoleon had suffered a great loss that he would never recover from, it created a downward fall for the great empire of France. This encouraged the rest of the European countries to rise against the mighty empire that had conquered them.
After the defeat in Russia, Holland and Belgium became overly nationalistic and started rebelling. This was a severe threat to the already loosing French. Later on these countries unify.
Prussia became one of the strongest oppositions to France, except for Britain they were the strongest, this was mostly happening after the turning point of the defeat in Russia. Before that nationalism had always existed but they simply could not maintain the strong opposition so they were forced to give in to the French ruling.
Austria was forced to join the French alliance and they did so until 1813 when they joined Britain and the other coalitions. Nationalism had always persisted along the way, even at times when the war wasn’t going to well for them.
It’s amazing how even when a country is under control by an other they don’t give up hope and they maintain nationalism. As people have more victories and hardships the more nationalistic they become.
