Essay for "Of Mice and Men"

Loneliness plays a major roll in "Of Mice and Men" for the charetors Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife.

Candy:
He lost his right hand in a farm accident. Now he has the meanest job on the ranch, he is the swamper. He shows us what happen to an old man beset by physical disability, loneliness and rejection. His reaction when his dog gets killed shows us that he is a human being with human feelings. "I'd make a will an' leave my share to you guys in case I kick off, 'cause I ain't got no relatives nor nothing. You guys got any money? Maybe we could do her right now?"

Crooks:
He is a proud man. He is a cripple and a Negro. He has black wrinkles and thin, pain - tightened lips. He is an illustration of the way in which loneliness can corrupt and destroy a man. Sometimes he is bullied by the other ranch hands. "Books ain't no good. A guy needs somebody to be near him… A guy goes nuts if ain't got nobody"

Curley's wife:
We don't know her real name. She is a tramp and gives everybody the eye. She is very pretty. She married Curley without really knowing him. She could have been a loving wife if she had met the right man. She does not love Curley's and want to go in pictures. "All the guys got a horseshoe tenement goin' on. It's on'y about four o'clock. None of them guys is goin'n to leave that tenement. Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely."
